highlights from the 2018 Golden Globes

As I sat facing the brightly lit television tonight, I was in awe of many moments of the 2018 Golden Globes. Now I could dive into the “top dresses” or “predictions that came true” post. Though, the amazingly conducted award show was so much more than that.

The 75th Golden Globes award show began with an amazing arrival of Hollywood’s best with a full black-out in support against the recent sexual harassment claims in the film industry. Not only were the entertainers dressed in their best black, many are paired with their “Times Up” Pins, sending a powerful message to millions of people across the globe.

Not only was this years Golden Globes inspiring and empowering, but the amount of female winners and people announcing the time for change was captivating. Each speech given was truly a sign of how not only the film industry has come together due recent events but people across the world. The room was filled with many different ethnicities, religions, views, personality’s, colors, and one simple idea.

Connie Britton dressed in all black and her sweater reading “Poverty Is Sexist” in support to Bono’s ONE Campaign, seeking equality in economically disadvantaged communities.

Also during the arrival, Emma Stone and Billie Jean King were joined together due to the movie “Battle of the Sexes” based on the true story of BJK and her resilience during the fight against male tennis player for not only equal pay in the sports industry, but equality through everyday life. NBC host Natalie Morales called King “the OG of gender inequality,” as BJK stated “every generation has to fight for equality and freedom forever.”

Oprah Winfrey received the Cecil B. DeMille Award and completely left the room and world in utter awe by her real and honest acceptance speech. She not only inspired young girls and females everywhere, but assured “time is up” for sexual predators and “Time’s Up” for females to change the world.

“I want all the girls watching to know a new day is on the horizon,” Winfrey continued. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure they are the leaders to take us to the time where nobody has to say ‘me too’ again.”

Too many amazing conversations continued at the 2018 Golden Globes. Below are some of my personal favorite moments.

“I think for all of us, whether we’ve been involved for weeks or days, to see this robust, enthusiastic stand of solidarity by so many, it shows that not only is the conversation timely, but the basic ideas — the ideas of equality, parity and safe work environments — are not controversial. We just have to get the work done.” -Sarah Jessica Parker

“Many of us were taught not to tattle, It was a culture of silencing, and that was normalized. I urge all of us to not only support survivors and bystanders who are brave enough to tell their truth, but to promote restorative justice. May we also please protect and employ them. May we teach our children that speaking out without the fear of retribution is our culture’s new North Star.” -Laura Dern

“It’s time for us to make a difference, and everyone can make a difference.” -Laura Dern

“Trust me, the women in this room tonight aren’t here for the food, we’re here for the work.” -Frances McDormand

“We are committed to making a change not just in our industry but every industry.” -Kerry Washington

“Tonight is about women wearing the pants so I chose to literally wear the pants, a lot of people might think black is a somber color, but the atmosphere here is so celebratory, so empowering, and that’s what I’m about, baby.” -Alison Brie

“It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first Black woman to be given [this] award. It is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them.” -Oprah Winfrey

I found this fitting to be my first post of 2018,

Here’s to speaking up and to cultivating change in today’s society. Time’s Up.
